Europe
Denmark
Safe, easy and expensive: Copenhagen's bikes, design and food, with Aarhus and the coast a short train ride away. English is universal; costs and grey, windy winters are the trade-offs.

Good to know
Entry
- Schengen member: non-EU visitors give fingerprints and a face photo to the Entry/Exit System (EES) on first entry.
- ETIAS pre-travel authorisation isn't required yet and has no confirmed start date; check the EU site before you fly.
- The Faroe Islands and Greenland are outside Schengen: a Schengen visa isn't valid there, and flights involve passport control.
Laws visitors break by accident
- Jaywalking and cycling without lights after dark bring on-the-spot fines.
- Carrying a knife in public without a valid reason is illegal.
- Face coverings such as burqas and niqabs are banned in public.
Etiquette
- Be punctual; Danes treat agreed times precisely.
- Stay out of bike lanes and signal before stopping on a bike.
- Small talk with strangers is rare; it isn't unfriendliness.
- Take shoes off when visiting someone's home.
Tipping
Service is included. Rounding up or about 10% for great table service is appreciated, never expected.
