When to visit Gibraltar

April–June and September–October. July–August is hot and busy with cruise visitors; winters are mild but wetter and windier.

Good to know

Entry

  • Since 15 July 2026, under the UK–EU treaty, there are no routine passport checks at the land border with Spain; customs rules still apply.
  • Arrivals by air or sea pass both Gibraltar and Spanish Schengen checks at the airport or port.
  • Non-EU visitors, including British tourists, should expect Schengen rules on entry, including EES registration and the 90/180-day limit.

Visa rules by passport

Laws visitors break by accident

  • Feeding or touching the macaques is illegal and heavily fined.
  • Traffic and pedestrians stop when planes use the runway crossing on Winston Churchill Avenue; obey the barriers.

Etiquette

  • Don't feed, touch or carry food near the macaques.
  • Locals switch between English and Spanish (Llanito); either is fine.
  • Gibraltar is British, not Spanish; avoid political jokes about sovereignty.

Tipping

As in the UK: 10% in restaurants if service isn't included; not expected in pubs.
