Haiti

Not a place for solo travel in 2026: gangs control most of Port-au-Prince and key highways, kidnappings are frequent and the capital's airport has no regular international flights.

When to visit Haiti

November–March is drier and less hot; hurricane season runs June–November. Security, not weather, decides whether a trip is possible.

Good to know

Entry

  • Port-au-Prince airport has no regular international flights; Cap-Haïtien (CAP) is the main way in and out.
  • Tourists pay a US$10 entry fee in cash; the US$55 departure tax is usually in the fare.
  • Land and sea borders with the Dominican Republic are closed; flights between the two resumed in May 2026.

Visa rules by passport

Laws visitors break by accident

  • Carry ID at all times; police checkpoints are frequent.
  • Drug charges bring long pre-trial detention in very poor prisons.

Etiquette

  • Greet with 'bonjou' or 'bonswa' before asking anything.
  • Always ask before photographing people; many object.
  • Dress neatly; appearance is valued in public.

Tipping

About 10% in restaurants without a service charge; tip drivers, fixers and hotel staff in cash.
