Kosovo

Young, welcoming and very cheap, with Prizren's old town, Peja's mountains and Pristina's café culture. Serbia border rules, basic healthcare and no ride-hailing apps are the trade-offs.

Good to know

Entry

  • Visa-free visitors get a 90-day entry stamp; Kosovo is outside Schengen.
  • Serbia doesn't recognise Kosovo's border: if you entered Kosovo from elsewhere, leave via a third country, not directly into Serbia.
  • Serbian-registered rental cars are often barred from Kosovo, and Kosovo rentals from Serbia.

Visa rules by passport

Laws visitors break by accident

  • Carry your passport; police ID checks happen
  • Photographing police or military sites can cause trouble with authorities

Etiquette

  • Kosovo's status is sensitive; in Serb-majority areas avoid flags and political debate
  • Take shoes off in homes and mosques; dress modestly in rural areas
  • Café macchiato is a social ritual; expect long sits

Tipping

Round up for coffee and taxis; about 10% in restaurants for good service.
