Tajikistan
Remote, mountainous and very hospitable: the Pamir Highway and Fann Mountains are the draws. Expect basic infrastructure, rough roads, a cash economy and little English beyond Dushanbe's guesthouses.

Good to know
Entry
- Many nationalities are visa-free; others get the e-Visa at evisa.tj, the only official site.
- The Pamir Highway region (GBAO) needs a separate permit; add it to your e-Visa application.
- Lake Sarez and some border areas need extra permits arranged through local agencies.
- Checkpoints along the Pamir Highway check passports and permits; carry both at all times.
Laws visitors break by accident
- Don't photograph government buildings, police, military or border posts.
- Travelling in GBAO without the permit can mean fines and being turned back.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly; cover shoulders and knees, especially in villages.
- Accept tea and bread when invited into homes; remove shoes.
- Use your right hand to give and receive.
Tipping
Not expected; 5–10% in Dushanbe restaurants is appreciated, and tip guides and drivers on tours.
