Getting around Marrakech
How to get around Marrakech
Walk in the medina; use petit taxis and apps for Gueliz and beyond. Trains and CTM or Supratours buses link Casablanca, Essaouira and Agadir.
Ways to get around Marrakech
| Option | Fare | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Petit taxi | About 20–50 MAD in town | Insist on the meter; fixed 'tourist' prices are common |
| City bus | About 4–6 MAD | Cheap; crowded; useful for the airport and Gueliz |
| ONCF train | About 100–200 MAD to Casablanca | 3–4 h; cheaper and safer than long drives |
| CTM / Supratours bus | About 80–120 MAD to Essaouira | 2.5–3 h; book ahead in season |
Ride-hailing apps in Marrakech
A 5 km ride costs about DH25–60 ($2.5–6.1).
| App | Notes |
|---|---|
| Bolt | Works in Marrakech; sometimes cheaper than petit taxis |
| inDrive | Negotiate fares; drivers may be unlicensed |
| Yango | Smaller network |
- App drivers may be unlicensed and ask you to sit in front. Petit taxis must use meters; refuse flat fares.
Arriving in Marrakech
Marrakech Menara (RAK)
Bus 19 to Jemaa el-Fna and Gueliz about 30 MAD, 20–30 min; petit taxi 70–120 MAD (agree before leaving); Bolt or inDrive also work.
Driving and onward travel
- Scooters: Rentable for 150–300 MAD a day, but medina and ring-road traffic is chaotic; an international licence is expected.
- Driving: on the right. Carry a 1968-Convention IDP with your home licence; the 1949 version is no longer accepted. Police speed checks are frequent.
- Onward travel in Morocco: Al Boraq high-speed trains link Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca; ONCF trains reach Marrakech and Fez. CTM and Supratours buses cover the rest, and shared grand taxis fill gaps.
