Croatia
Easy, safe and well connected, with island ferries, walkable old towns and good English. Summer crowds and coastal prices are the trade-offs; spring and autumn are calmer and cheaper.

When to visit Croatia
May–June and September–early October for the coast and islands; July–August is hot, crowded and pricey. Zagreb works year-round, with Advent markets in December.
Good to know
Entry
- Schengen member: 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area. Non-EU visitors give fingerprints and a photo for the EES on entry.
- ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is not yet required; its launch has slipped beyond 2026.
- Your accommodation must register you with police within 48 hours; hotels do it. Staying privately, register at a police station.
- Border guards may ask for proof of accommodation, an onward ticket and enough money for your stay.
Laws visitors break by accident
- Swimwear or going shirtless in Split, Dubrovnik and other town centres brings on-the-spot fines
- Drinking alcohol in public spaces is fined in several tourist town centres
- Outdoor fires and barbecues are illegal June–October outside designated areas
Etiquette
- Cover shoulders and knees in churches; keep swimwear for the beach
- Greet shopkeepers with 'dobar dan'; coffee is a long, social sit-down
- Don't lump Croatia in with Serbia or call it 'Yugoslavia'
Tipping
Not expected but appreciated: round up or leave about 10% for good restaurant service, ideally in cash so staff get it.
