West coast (KL, Penang, Langkawi) is best December–February and June–August; east-coast islands (Perhentian, Tioman) March–October, as many resorts close in the Nov–Feb monsoon.
Good to know
Entry
- Submit the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within 3 days before arrival; Singaporeans are exempt. Fake MDAC sites charge fees.
- Passports need six months' validity; officers can ask for an onward ticket and proof of funds.
- Sabah and Sarawak run their own immigration control, so you are checked again flying in from the peninsula.
Laws visitors break by accident
- Drug trafficking can bring the death penalty; possessing small amounts means jail
- Smoking is banned in restaurants, cafés and many public places, with fines
- Insulting religion or royalty, including online, can lead to arrest
Etiquette
- Use your right hand to eat, give and receive
- Remove shoes at homes and mosques; dress modestly at religious sites
- Point with your thumb, not your index finger
- Avoid public affection; don't eat in front of fasting Muslims during Ramadan
Tipping
Not expected; many restaurants add a 10% service charge plus SST. Round up or leave small change for good service.
